River Washed Gundogs raises AKC German Shorthaired Pointers bred to handle a feat few dogs ever master: hunting ruffed grouse through unforgiving UP timber. Outsmarting the king of upland birds demands an elite nose, relentless drive, and the intelligence to know exactly when to move, when to hold, and when to trust a faint scent. That same brilliance allows them to seamlessly shift gears, opening up to cover vast western prairies with equal precision. What we breed for

Every GSP has a nose. Not every GSP knows what to do with it. We breed for dogs that read a situation — a grouse that's running instead of holding, a covey that flushed wild yesterday and won't tolerate the same approach today — and adjust without being told. That kind of judgment can't be trained into a dog from scratch. It has to be bred in, then sharpened by real hours in real cover. Here's what it looks like on the ground.
Ground one
Ruffed Grouse, Upper Peninsula
Untangle the scent. Pin the runner. Stand staunchly — no matter how many times the bird moves first. Thick alder and second-growth timber reward patience over speed, and a dog that can read a grouse's game and stay a step ahead of it.

Before it's part of River Washed Gundogs, it's proven itself on real wild birds, in real cover, across real miles — then just as calm when the collar comes off. Our foundation ties back to Mike Johnson at Black Point Gundogs, a friend and mentor whose lines are among the most respected in the Northwoods, and ones we're proud to help carry forward.
